The Historical District of Key West is roughly from the Waterfront West including Bahama Village to White Street. This area is know as "Old Town". The whole area has been declared a "Historical Preseveration Area" With in this area are found a unique archetecual style typical of Key West called a "Conch House". Construction is of wood, either lapstrake or board and batten. The older ones are made of "Dade County Pine" (that came from Pensacola Florida). The main characteristics include
front porches that are parallel to the street, have high ceilings, concrete piers and metal roofs. Gingerbread trim a decrotive wood treatment usually made by seafaring men during the 1800's is another distinguishing charistictic. Each man had theiir own design; there are as many styles as there were wood carvers. Porch spindles were also individually made and are also varied.
